When you have young children in your home, you will know just how important it is to keep on top of all the cleaning. A dirty home can lead to your kids falling ill often because of the buildup of bacteria and germs. Thankfully, cleaning your home isn’t too tricky to keep under control. However, there is also one other area that you need to be particularly careful of. And that is your children’s own personal hygiene. While they are babies, you will be able to take care of this. However, once they become toddlers and get a bit of independence, it could become tricky keeping an eye on their personal hygiene. So it is extremely important to teach them the basics. But how exactly do you do this? Here are some of my favorite tips for helping your kids learn all about the importance of personal hygiene.
Right at the beginning, when you first try to teach them about personal hygiene, your kids probably won’t understand why it is important. This lack of understanding could lead to them not wanting to learn, and they might even become frustrated when you continually try and teach them. So it is extremely important that you remain patient with them. If you do stay patient and can slowly tell them everything, then they will be a lot more willing to cooperate. If you don’t stay patient, you will only end up annoyed and could get quite angry with the kids. And this will only result in them becoming even more stubborn! Sure, it would be nice if your kids washed their hands after using the toilet when you tell them, but things aren’t that simple. So expect to have to retell them over and over again.
Win Them Over With Cool Gadgets
Children love gadgets and gizmos. So if you can get some that will help them to improve their personal hygiene, you won’t have to nag them quite so much! For example, there are lots of soap dispensers that play music or make a noise whenever you use them. If you get one of these, you will find that your kids love to wash their hands and listen to the tune! Another fun gadget that can help improve your kids’ hygiene is an electric toothbrush. They will think that they are very cool and grown up when they use this exciting gadget! If you aren’t sure which electric toothbrush is best, you can always take a look at online review sites for ideas: http://testingteam.net/best-electric-toothbrush-reviews/.
Lead By Example
Kids follow by example. I’m sure you will have already heard the saying ‘monkey see, monkey do’. Well, you need to think of your kids as the monkey from the saying. That means that it is imperative that you and all the other adults in your home are setting a good example when it comes to personal hygiene. Take your kids into the bathroom with you whenever you brush your teeth so that they see you do it as well. You should also talk to yourself about what you will do whenever you are in earshot of your kids. For example, remind yourself out loud that you need to wash your hands before you start cooking dinner. If your kids can hear, they will realize that this cleanliness must be an important part of cooking and preparing meals.
Use Visual Resources
Just telling your kids about the importance of cleanliness won’t be enough for it all to stick in their heads. It is important to use a variety of resources with which to teach them. And visual ones are fantastic, as they can really help all the information stick and make it feel very fun and interactive for kids. One easy way to use visual resources is just to watch the TV with your kids. Whenever you notice a cartoon or TV character washing or grooming themselves, you should point this out to your child. Hopefully, their child will remember that their favorite TV character also ensures that they are always clean, and will follow this example. There are also many children’s books that aim to help children understand the importance of personal hygiene. Not only that, though, but there are now also apps that have been developed to help teach children about cleanliness and grooming. One of the most popular at the minute is Pepi Bath: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pepi-bath/id505124220?mt=8.
Get Into A Routine
Kids love routines. You will already know this from their bedtime routine. I’m sure that you will find your kids find it very difficult falling asleep whenever there is the slightest change in their bedtime routine! As you can see, it is also important to build up a personal hygiene routine. As soon as you wake up in the morning, take them into the bathroom and give them a chance to brush their teeth and wash their face. After a few weeks, they will get into this habit and will start doing it themselves. You should also start washing your hands together as a family before you prepare your meals. That way, they’ll start to instinctively wash their hands before they handle food themselves.
Explain Why They Need To Groom And Be Clean
Of course, one of the most important reasons why we need personal hygiene is because it keeps us safe from germs and bacteria. Your children may be too young to understand this exactly right now, but it is still very important that you tell them that there is a very important reason why we do this. You don’t need to go into all the scary details about all these germs and bacteria causing infections. After all, you don’t want to give your kids nightmares! But by telling them that it is very important – without all the gory details – then they will understand that there is a very good reason as to why personal hygiene is so important!
Hopefully, this blog post will help you teach your kids all about personal hygiene without too much trouble!
