Our parents spend most of their lives worrying about us, but there comes a time when the tides change. As our parents get older, their needs increase. But, you want to afford them as much independence as possible. It’s not easy to have your elderly parent living alone while you go home and worry about their safety. However, there are many things you can do to ensure they stay safe without you having to check in every five minutes.
Limit the Alcohol
We all know that alcohol has an effect on our co-ordination and balance. In an elderly person, these risks are far higher than in a person in their 30’s or 40’s. If you notice that your parent isn’t able to hold their drinks the way they used to, it may become a safety hazard. The last thing you want to find out is that your parent had a few night caps and ended up falling down the stairs. If you feel it’s right, you may want to think about limiting the amount your parent is able to drink.
There aren’t many elderly parents who can get away with living life without having to take some form of medication. In fact, many elderly people have to take more than one type of medication. As we grow older, our memories aren’t as great as they used to be, so without help you parent may be at risk of taking double doses or forgetting a dose entirely. You can help by allocating the medication to each day by using pill box that have the days marked on them.
The elderly are often at greater risk of burglaries. This is because they can often be persuaded to let people inside or forget to lock doors at night. Chat to your parent about the risks of letting strangers who do not have appointments inside the house. It may also be smart to look into the best home security system, so you’re alerted if anything unusual happens. Make sure your parent is aware of the dangers of leaving valuables on display.
Physical and Mental Exercise
One of the best ways you can keep your elderly parent safe is to keep them alert for as long as possible. Exercise in all forms is fantastic for elderly people. A short walk every day will ensure your parent stays balanced and strong. Reading and mind puzzles are also a great way of exercising the brain and staying alert. It can be anything from a few word searches to a 500-piece puzzle or a game of cards.
One of the most common conditions the elderly struggle with is loneliness. Encourage your parent to take part in elderly groups and chat to people in the same position. Getting out and having a chat, even if for one hour a week, can help tremendously with vitality. Some elderly people strike up good relationships with their doctors and nurses, and even the staff on tills at their local supermarkets.
