If you’re a single parent, sooner or later the day will come when your kids fly the nest and leave you living alone. While there’s nothing wrong with living on your own – some people actually prefer it – it can take some time to get used to. So, with that in mind, below are some suggestions for making the adjustment to living alone that little bit easier.
Do a lot of socializing
Are you used to a packed out house – normally, your kids and their friends are always hanging around? It can be hard to get used to having an empty house, especially when you’re so used to having lots of people around. Those first few months of living on your own can feel incredibly lonely, that is if you don’t make an effort to get out and about and socialize. Aim to spend as much time with your friends or other relatives as possible, so that you don’t end up feeling lonely and missing your kids too much. (It’s perfectly natural to miss them, but what you don’t want to do is dwell on it.)
Take up a new hobby
A great way to keep yourself busy in the evenings when you’d normally be making dinner for the kids or sat with them watching TV is to take up a new hobby. This could mean trying out a new sport or exercise class, or it could be doing something creative, such as crocheting, adult coloring, or silk painting. It doesn’t matter what hobby you choose to take up, just as long as you find something that keeps you busy and makes living solo that little bit more enjoyable. Whether you start salsa dancing or decide to take up French, it really doesn’t matter.
Learn how to be comfortable sleeping alone
The number one thing that a lot of people struggle with when living alone for the first time in years is getting a good night’s sleep. There’s something about being in the house on your own at night, that can make you feel a little anxious about intruders because you feel more vulnerable. The most important thing is having that piece of mind when living alone – you need to feel safe and secure, which is why having all the best security in place is crucial. Honestly, update your home security, and you will sleep easier for it.
Perfect the art of cooking for one
The chances are that you’re used to cooking meals to feed the entire family. However, now that you’re living alone, you need to get used to cooking for one. Otherwise, you’re going to end up with a lot of leftovers. So, the question is, how can you go about doing that? The first step is to buy a cookbook that’s all about cooking for one, as that way you will know the exact ingredient measurements needed for cooking for one person and shouldn’t be left with too much food. If there’s an old family recipe that you love, divide the ingredients by a quarter and cook up a smaller portion.
It might take time to adjust to living alone, but once you’ve adjusted, you may end up loving living alone – a lot of people do.
